Hide-A-Hose vs. Chameleon: Retractable Hose System Comparison
Both Hide-A-Hose and Chameleon offer retractable hose solutions for central vacuum systems. The comparison below highlights several key features homeowners and installers commonly evaluate when choosing a retractable hose system. Features and availability may vary by model and installation requirements.
| Feature | Hide-A-Hose 6000 PRO | Chameleon |
|---|---|---|
| Warranty | 6000 PRO is backed by a lifetime warranty, giving homeowners long-term confidence in the system. | Chameleon has a 5-year warranty, offering a shorter coverage period. |
| Engineering | 6000 PRO uses only 8 parts, which means fewer pieces that can wear, break, stick, or need service over time. | Chameleon uses 38 parts, creating a more complex mechanism with more pieces that could potentially cause problems. |
| Locking Mechanism | The simple pull-push lock lets you pull out only the amount of hose you need, lock it at any length, clean, then release it when you’re done. | Standard lock only works when the hose is fully extended, limiting use at shorter lengths. Optional lock adds a second locking method, which can confuse users. |
| Easy Service | All 6000 PRO parts can be replaced without tools, making service faster and simpler. | Chameleon requires tools for servicing, and small parts can fall down the vacuum pipe during replacement. |
| Low-Voltage Wiring | 6000 PRO has no low-voltage wire splices hidden behind the wall, reducing the chance of a hard-to-reach wiring issue later. | Chameleon splices the low-voltage wiring behind the wall. If that connection ever fails, it can be difficult to access and repair. |
| Wall Mounting Design | 6000 PRO mounts to the inside of the wall stud, helping the drywall stay flat for a cleaner finished installation. | Chameleon mounts to the front of the stud, which can cause the sheetrock to bow. |
| Magnetic Door Safety | 6000 PRO magnets are positioned so that they cannot fall forward into the living space. If a magnet ever came loose, it would stay behind the wall. | Chameleon also uses magnets, but they are not positioned the same way, creating a greater chance for loose magnet could fall forward into the home. |
