One Idea Changed Everything
Every great innovation begins with a simple question.
In 1999, Gary Drivstuen was watching the pneumatic tube system at his local bank when an idea struck him. If suction could transport documents through a network of tubes, could that same principle be used to retract a vacuum hose back into the wall?
That simple question ultimately led to an entirely new way to use a central vacuum system.
Working alongside his son, Rod, Gary began turning that idea into reality. Together, they designed and refined what would become the world’s first retractable central vacuum hose system. Their goal wasn’t simply to invent something new—it was to solve a problem that homeowners experienced every time they vacuumed: dragging, storing, and wrestling with a long hose.
What started as an idea in the Drivstuen family’s basement workshop quickly evolved into Hide-A-Hose, a company built on practical engineering, craftsmanship, and a genuine passion for improving everyday life.

The Beginning
Gary and Rod Drivstuen developed the world’s first retractable central vacuum hose system after asking a simple question: What if the vacuum’s own suction could pull the hose back into the wall? That breakthrough would forever change the central vacuum industry.
Early 2000s
